2025 Christmas Card from an Artist

2025 Christmas Card from an Artist

It's that time of year again!

This was the third year for the annual Christmas card following 2024's card and 2023's card. I didn't name a theme as I already had the perfect design in mind.

I opted for a three-block print of the fuzziest, most cantankerous Christmas pony I could conjure up.

You know the kind. These are the ponies that require sugar cubes in your pockets to catch them out of the pasture, and they might accept a saddle after lots of scratches. You could ask for an easy lope, and get a full blown run. Or, you could ask for a walk and get a sullen stick in the mud that won't move instead. Oh, and that ribbon you tied in their hair...it could become the next horse-eating monster you didn't see coming.

To a horse-crazy kid, those ponies are perfect.

My personal connection to this design is actually not from a pony at all, but a short, plump Quarter Horse named Peppy. I believe he was 6, and I was 14 or 15 when he arrived at the house. He had many quirks about him, but the one I didn't see coming was his fear of a pickup and trailer driving in an arena. I never knew he could move so FAST! The first time it happened I thought we had teleported from one side of the arena to the other. I finally overcame my fear of his reaction to trailers to help him, but he still always gave them a wary eye and kept his legs ready to spring away.

Whether or not you knew a pony like this, it really applies to any pet or animal. While some may be sweeter, prefer peanut butter over sugar cubes, or be the kind that never leaves your side, those personalities all shine through.

The Process

Starting with thumbnail sketches then choosing the best design, the printing process is all done by hand by pulling each card through an etching press. It's a lot of work to print each layer, but I get so much joy from creating a unique design for these cards and mailing them out to you. It's a reminder for me that this season is about generosity and community.
